10 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU START MODELING

When I started modeling I wish someone had told me things I should be aware of, instead of taking years to learn and making mistakes. However, mistakes are part of every job and probably hard to avoid. Here is a list of 10 things every new face has to know before starting modeling.

1.SUCCESS IS NOT HAPPENING OVERNIGHT

When you see this girl who has an amazing career, works for famous brands, appearing on the covers, don`t think she made it overnight.  It usually takes many years of work and sometimes no work at all, to reach the acceptable point of your career. Even then, no one guarantees you success. You probably should prepare yourself for failure because you will fail many times. All that matters is, keep trying.

2.REJECTIONS

In this business, you will be getting rejections every day! Yes, you hear it right, rejections are part of this job and there is no way to escape it. Imagine you are going every day for a job interview (CASTINGS), but not one but most probably many, chances are high that you will get rejected on some of them, sometimes and if it’s your lucky day you may book all jobs without rejections which is pretty rare.

3.YOU CAN’T PLEASE EVERYONE

Keep in mind that you can`t fit every job and make every client happy about your look. One day you will go for the casting and they will tell you that you are too skinny, another day you will not be able to fit their jeans, oh that`s because you are fat for this client and he will not book you. Then you may do a casting for a show but get rejected because you are too short. Oh by the way beauty campaign is off because the client likes you but doesn’t like your nose.

4. KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR MOTHER AGENT

Are they doing their job in your favor or theirs? Be aware that sometimes your agent will send you on a contract not because you should be placed in this country/city to earn money, get editorials and good pictures but because of their interest which can be different. Sometimes agents have a deal with other agencies by sending packages (a group of models) for certain compensation for them only. Always search and calculate what can you get from each contract they are offering you because you are giving the most worthy things you have, your time and energy.

5. CLUBS AND NIGHTLIFE

As a model, you have doors open to many places as well invitations for nights out which can be fun but don`t lose yourself in this life. As well it can be dangerous for young new faces who don`t know how it all works and lose focus from their career. Long nights out means sleepless nights and alcohol and that`s what you definitely don`t need if you want to look good and be able to work as a model for many years.

6. NO ONE WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU UNLESS YOU DO

Don`t think that your agency will track your lifestyle and take care where you are, with who you are hanging out, how you live, they are not your parents. Every agency wants you to book as many jobs and look a certain way, that`s all they care about, once you don`t you are most probably out of the game. Everyone is replaceable, especially in modeling nowadays when the competition is huge.

7. CONNECTIONS ARE EVERYTHING

This is probably the best advice I can give to you. When I started, I wasn`t aware of that so I mostly kept a distance and stayed in the apartment in my spare time. The best thing you can do is to go out to meet people. Build a good relationship with hairstylists, makeup artists, photographers, stylist, bookers, everyone related to your work. Your future work will depend on your exposure to these people who can be crucial in booking a model for the next job.

8. BUILD YOUR REPUTATION AND RESPECT EVERYONE

Wherever you appear you have to look good and leave a positive impression. No matter what mood you are in clients shouldn’t have to deal with it, you have to be professional and positive so they want to book you again. It is all about how you make people feel. “People will forget what you say, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you make them feel.”

9. LEARN FROM EACH PERSON YOU MEET

You will be living with girls from many different countries, it is nice to hear all those life stories and learn from them. Every time you hear one life story it is like reading one book and this is a beautiful thing about being a model and traveling the world. Talk to people and learn from them.

10. CAREFULLY CHECK YOUR STATEMENT

This is very important. When your booker shows you your statement and how much you’ve earned or haven’t, kindly ask them to print it for you, go back to the apartment and take a time to check every single detail. As a new face, you may not understand it but then the way to go about it is to ask your mother agent to explain you or your flatmate who is more experienced than you and willing to help you.
